Doctor Who Vs. Luther, Series 3

London-born actor and DJ, Idris Elba returned as the titular Metropolitan Police detective, DCI John Luther for the third and final full season of BBC One's dark psychological crime drama, first shown in the 
summer of 2013. 
Warren Brown and Michael Smiley reprised their 
regular roles as DS Justin Ripley and Benny Silver, 
and a two-part sequel finally aired last December.
This four-part run earned more Golden Globe and 
Emmy award nominations for series creator and writer Neil Cross, and Elba won a RTS award for 
Best Actor. 
Cross later penned The Rings of Akhaten and Hide.
Both Elba and Cross have confirmed there are plans
 for a film version of Lutherand a spin-off TV series based around killer Alice Morgan (Ruth Wilson's 
character from the two previous seasons). 
Another repeat run of the series began on W (formerly the Watch channel) last night, and featured eighteen other Doctor Who cast and crew connections:

  • Big Finish actor Brown voiced Stephen Gibson for Industrial Evolution (2011), both Rufus Stone and To'Koth for Signs & Wonders (2014), and Lieutenant Sam Bishop for UNIT: Extinction (2015), UNIT: Shutdown and UNIT: Silenced (both 2016)
  • Smiley voiced Seedleson for Creatures of Beauty (BF, 2003), and played Colonel Blue (pictured) in Into the Dalek
  • Lucian Msamati (Barnaby) was Guido in The Vampires of Venice
  • Sasha Behar (Dani) was Spurrina in The Fires of Pompeii
  • Selva Rasalingam (Lane) was Ranjit in The Power of Three
  • Big Finish artist Lizzie Hopley (Dr. Harris) voiced the Mantasphid Queen for The Infinite Quest, Alice Flowers for The Gunpowder PlotGemma Griffin for Terror Firma (2005), Lady Lillian Hawthorne for The Veiled Leopard, Sue for Night Thoughts (both 2006), and Sister Christie for The New Adventures of Bernice Summerfield: The Unbound Universe (2016)
  • Alexandra Moen (Eve) was Lucy Saxon in The Sound of DrumsLast of the Time Lords and The End of Time
  • Michelle Duncan (Kiera) was Lady Isobel in Tooth and Claw
  • Elliot Cowan (Marwood) has been cast in The Fifth Traveller (BF, new for 2016)
  • Georgina French (Natalie) was a motion capture actor on The Eternity Clock video game
  • Dan Euston was a stuntman on The Crimson Horror too
  • Farren Blackburn also directed The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe and The Rings of Akhaten - the latter story was edited by Sam Williams, the film editor here too
  • Simon Maloney was the first assistant director on An Adventure in Space and Time too
  • Stephen Pehrsson was also the cinematographer on eleven adventures, from The Pandorica Opens to The Crimson Horror
  • Matthew Scrivener was the first assistant director on the 2011 Christmas special too
  • Sam Smithard was also the camera assistant on fourteen stories (from Asylum of the Daleks to The Name of the Doctor)
  • Tom Williams was camera assistant on Let's Kill Hitler too
