Doctor Who Vs. The Ruby in the Smoke

Published in 1985, the first book 
in Philip Pullman's Sally Lockhart 
quartet, The Ruby in the Smoke 
was dramatised for BBC1 and was originally broadcast at Christmas 2006.
This period drama is notable for
marking the television debut of
Matt Smith (pictured here as Jim Taylor), and is the first portrayal 
of Victorian heroine Lockhart, by 
Billie Piper. The pair also starred together in the sequel, The Shadow in the North, and Piper's popular ITV 
series, Secret Diary of a Call Girl (both 2007). Pullman's other two novels
in the series remain unadapted for TV.
The first of The Sally Lockhart Mysteries was repeated again on the Drama channel today, and featured Julie Walters (as Mrs. Holland) and fourteen further Doctor Who cast and crew connections:

  • Big Finish actor Trevor Cooper (Higgs) played Takis in Revelation of the Daleks and Friar Tuck in Robot of Sherwood, and voiced Sir Ralph for The Doomwood Curse, Shanks for The Haunting of Thomas Brewster (both 2008), Judah for The Beast of OrlokSmithy for Castle of Fear (both 2009), both Captain Maddox and Stennan for Army of Death (2011), both the Colonel and Kimball for The Emerald Tiger (2012), and both Jonathan Jaggers and Mr. Preddle for Judoon in Chains (2016)
  • Robert Glenister (Selby) was Salateen in The Caves of Androzani
  • JJ Field (Garland) voiced David McCallister for Blue Forgotten Planet (BF, 2009)
  • Don Gilet (Hopkins) was Lance Bennett in The Runaway Bride
  • David Harewood (Bedwell twins) was Joshua Naismith in The End of Time, and voiced President Vallan, also for Army of Death
  • Pik Sen Lim (Sheng) was married to classic era writer, Don Houghton, and worked on his second story The Mind of Evil as Captain Chin Lee
  • Hayley Atwell (Rosa) voiced Asha for Blood of the Daleks (2007), Eleanor for The Doomwood Curse, Seska for The Whispering Forest (2010), and President Moorkurk for both The Sands of Life and War Against the Laan (2013)
  • Julia Joyce (Young Sally) had previously doubled for Piper in Father's Day as young Rose, and was Holly Frobisher in Torchwood: Children of Earth
  • Martin Jarvis (voice of Captain Lockhart) made three classic series appearances - as Hilio in The Web Planet, as Butler for Invasion of the Dinosaurs, and the Governor in Vengeance on Varos, and starred opposite Colin Baker again when he voiced Nigel Rochester for Jubilee (BF, 2003)
  • Ramon Tikaram (Maharajah) voiced Wanchese for Voyage to the New World (2012), the Castellan for Doom Coalition 1, Marlock for Theatre of War, and Colonel Shindi for UNIT: Extinction (all 2015) and UNIT: Silenced (2016)
  • stunt double Charles Jarman was a stunt performer on The Lazarus Experiment
  • Paul Bennett was also third assistant director on BlinkTurn Left and three instalments of Torchwoodscript editor Caroline Skinner was co-executive producer on the revived series (from The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe to The Name of the Doctor), The Doctors Revisited and An Adventure in Space and Time
  • Cathy Cosgrove was the property buyer on Delta  and the Bannermen too
