Doctor Who Vs. The Shadow in the North

Philip Pullman's second Sally
Lockhart adventure (published
in 1986) was dramatised for BBC
One, and first aired at Christmas
2007.
The next two Lockhart stories were also intended to be adapted, but The Tiger in the Well (1991) and The Tin Princess (1994) remain unmade for television.
Billie Piper (as Sally), Matt
Smith (Jim Taylor), JJ Field (Garland), David Harewood (Bedwell), and Hayley Atwell
(Rosa) all reprised their roles from The Ruby in the Smoke, and Caroline
Skinner again acted as script editor.
The Sally Lockhart Mysteries sequel was repeated again on the Drama
channel today, and the period serial featured eight other Doctor Who cast
and crew connections:

  • Adjoa Andoh (Jessie) and Dona Croll (Nellie) both appeared in New Earth, as Cat Nuns Sister Jatt and Matron Casp - Andoh was then cast as Martha Jones' mum, Francine for Series three, and voiced Nurse Albertine for Big Finish's Year of the Pig (2006)
  • Sir John Standing (as Garland) voiced Fenric for Gods and Monsters (BF, 2012), and Professor Threadstone for Vampire of the Mind (BF, 2016)
  • Julian Rhind-Tutt (MacKinnon) voiced Lexhan for The Paradise of Death
  • Phil Cornwell (Harris) was a Stallholder in The Fires of Pompeii
  • Paul Copley (Paton) voiced Dad for Spare Parts (BF, 2002)
  • Paul Kennington (Nordenfels) was a stuntman on Rise of the Cybermen, The Age of Steel, Army of GhostsDoomsday and The Doctor's Daughter
  • Fran Needham was also make-up artist on Full Circle and Arc of Infinity
