Doctor Who Vs. Carry On At Your Convenience

The twenty-second production
from the Carry On stable was
released in late 1971, and was the
first commercial failure of the run.
Known as Carry On Round the Bend outside the UK, the feature attempted to explore political themes of the day but alienated
the traditionally working-class
target audience.
Shown on ITV today, the film
featured series stalwarts Sid
James (as Sid Plummer),
Kenneth Williams (WC Boggs), Charles Hawtrey (Charles Coote), Bernard
Bresslaw (Bernie Hulke), Joan Sims (Chloe), Hattie Jacques (Beattie), and
 nine Doctor Who cast connections:

  • Bresslaw played Varga (pictured) in The Ice Warriors
  • Kenneth Cope (Vic Spanner here; Cyril Carter in Carry On Matron) was Packard in Warriors' Gate
  • Geoffrey Hughes (Willie) was Popplewell in The Ultimate Foe
  • Hugh Futcher (Ernie here; Cabbie in Carry On Again Doctor; Jailer in Carry On Abroad; Citizen in Carry On Girls; Painter in Carry On Behind) was Hickman in (episode 1 of) The Sea Devils
  • Harry Towb (Doctor) was Osgood in The Seeds of Death (1), and McDermott in Terror of the Autons
  • Julian Holloway (Roger here; Ticket Collector in Follow That Camel; Simmons in Carry On Doctor; Major Shorthouse in Carry On Up the Khyber; Jim in Carry On Camping; Adrian in Carry On Loving; Sir Thomas in Carry On Henry; Captain Rhodes in Carry On Christmas; Major Butcher in Carry On England) was Paterson in Survival
  • Roland Oliver (Worker) was Neman in The Keeper of Traken
  • Simon Cain (Barman) was Curly in The Enemy of the World, and a titular reptilian in The Silurians
  • Fred Wood (Strike-breaker) was the Running Man in Daleks: Invasion Earth 2150 AD
