Doctor Who Vs. Agatha Christie's Miss Marple: A Pocketful of Rye

My favourite Agatha Christie novel (her fifty-sixth,
correctly titled A Pocket Full of Rye) was published
in 1953, and this BBC adaptation was repeated
again on Alibi yesterday.
The original (and still the most faithful) Miss Marple
TV series began with The Body in the Library in 1984.
Joan Hickson (1906-1998) portrayed the title role
in twelve mysteries, until 1992. A Pocketful of Rye
was the fourth story in the series, and first aired in
March 1985. An ITV version followed in 2009.
Series producer George Gallacio was production
manager on thirty episodes of the original run
(from Planet of the Daleks to The Seeds of Doom), whilst Peter Davison played Lance Fortescue
(pictured) here, and this two-part drama featured
sixteen other Doctor Who cast and crew connections:

  • Big Finish actor Timothy West (Rex Fortescue) voiced Kai Tobias for Phobos (2007), Ronald Turvey for Cuddlesome (2008), and Dr. Magnus Soames for House of Blue Fire (2011)

  • Annette Badland (Gladys) was Margaret Blaine, alias Blon Fel Fotch Pasameer-Day Slitheen, in Aliens of LondonWorld War Three and Boom Town, and voiced Queen Karlina for Equilibrium and Thelma for Suburban Hell (both 2015)

  • cinematographer John Walker was a film cameraman on nine stories, from Horror of Fang Rock to Revelation of the Daleks
  • Graham Walker was also the film editor on all five of Joe Ahearne's episodes for Series 1
