Doctor Who Vs. The Casebook of Sherlock Holmes, Series 1

Following Granada's fourth season (The Return 
of Sherlock Holmes), Jeremy Brett and Edward 
Hardwicke next portrayed Holmes and Watson in the 
West End production of The Secret of Sherlock Holmes.
Specially written by TV screenwriter Jeremy Paul, the 
play was staged at the Wyndham Theatre between 
September 1988 and September 1989.
The fifth series of this acclaimed period drama, now 
dramatised as The Casebook, began another repeat 
run on ITV3 yesterday.
The final dozen (of fifty-six) Sherlock Holmes short stories were originally published as The Case-Book
 in The Strand magazine between 1921 and 1927. 
The first six story adaptations were first broadcast
on ITV in the winter of 1991, and featured twelve 
Doctor Who cast and crew connections:

The Disappearance of Lady Frances Carfax (UK TX: February 21 1991)
  • Michael Jayston (Earl of Ruftan) played the Valeyard (pictured) in The Trial of a Time Lord season, a role he reprised for Big Finish's Unbound: He Jests at Scars (2003), then Trial of the Valeyard (2014) and The Sixth Doctor: The Last Adventure (2015) - he also voiced the Tsar for Serpent Crest: Tsar Wars (AudioGo, 2011)

  • Leslie Schofield (McCarthy) was Leroy in (episode 4 of) The War Games, and Calib in The Face of Evil
  • James Purefoy (James) voiced Count Dracula for Son of the Dragon (BF, 2007)
  • stunt arranger Greg Powell was the Knight in The Time Monster
The Illustrious Client (UK TX: March 21)
  • Roy Holder (Johnson) was Krelper in The Caves of Androzani
The Creeping Man (UK TX: March 28)
  • Charles Kay (Presbury) voiced the Curator for Excelis Rising (BF, 2002)
  • Big Finish actor Adrian Lukis (Bennett) voiced Bragg for Cobwebs (2010), Byzan for The Children of Seth (2011), Henry Marsh for The Justice of Jalxar (2013), and Professor Jeffrey Broderick for the Counter Measures spin-off audio series
