Doctor Who Vs. The Return of Sherlock Holmes, Series 1

Jeremy Brett again portrayed the Great Detective
for Granada's acclaimed period drama, and was
now joined by Edward Hardwicke (1932-2011) 
 as Dr. Watson.
The London-born actor had starred in The 
Greek Interpreter (1968), and would later play
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in Photographing Fairies.
Eric Porter and Colin Jeavons again appeared as
 Professor Moriarty (in The Empty Houseand 
Inspector Lestrade (three stories here), whilst 
Patrick Allen guest starred as Moriarty's 
henchman, Colonel Sebastian Moran.
These seven mysteries (from a collection 
of thirteen, and all originally serialised in The 
Strand from 1903first aired in the summer 
of 1986.
Another repeat run of this third season began
on ITV3 yesterday, and starred Ian Marter (in his final television role, 
as Inspector Fereday in part three) and fifteen other Doctor Who cast and 
crew connections:

  • James Bree (Coroner here; Barrister for Without a Clue, 1988) played the Security Chief in The War Games, Nefred in Full Circle, and the Keeper of the Matrix in The Ultimate Foe
  • Paul Lacoux (Adair) voiced Dr. Mathias for Big Finish's The Harvest (2004)
The Abbey Grange (UK TX: July 16)
  • Nicolas Chagrin (Viviani) was Quillam in Vengeance on Varos
The Musgrave Ritual (UK TX: July 23)
  • Teresa Banham (Janet) was the Governor of HMP Broadfell in The End of Time
  • production manager Liam Foster began his career as as AFM on Spearhead from Space
The Second Stain (UK TX: July 30)
  • Alan Bennion (Bates) made three appearances as an Ice Warrior - Slaar in The Seeds of Death, Izlyr in The Curse of Peladon, and Azaxyr in The Monster of Peladon
The Man With The Twisted Lip (UK TX: August 6)
  • Denis Lill (Inspector Bradstreet here, Series 4: The Bruce-Partington Plans, and Series 7: The Mazarin Stone) was Dr. Fendelman in The Image of Fendahl, and Sir George Hutchinson in The Awakening
  • Albert Moses (Lascar) was an Indian Sailor in Carnival of Monsters
  • Ozzie Yue (Malay) was the Foreman in The Angels Take Manhattan
The Priory School (UK TX: August 13)
  • Nicolas Gecks (Wilder here; Makepeace in Sherlock Holmes and the Leading Lady, 1991; Lestrade in Sherlock, 2002) was Albert Dumfries in The Sound of Drums
  • Michael Bertenshaw (Aveling) was Mr. Cole in The Next Doctor
  • Big Finish actor Christopher Benjamin (Huxtable) first starred as Sir Keith Gold in Inferno, then as Colonel Hugh Curbishley in The Unicorn and the Wasp thirty-eight years later, but is best known as Henry Gordon Jago (pictured) from The Talons of Weng-Chiang - he first reprised the role for The Companion Chronicles release The Mahogany Murders (2009) then the Jago and Litefoot audio series (2010 to present), Voyage to Venus, Voyage to the New World (both 2012), The Justice of Jalxar (2013), The Worlds of Doctor Who: Mind Games (2014), The Last Adventure: Stage FrightJago & Litefoot & Strax: The Haunting (both 2015), and The Jago & Litefoot Revival (2017) - he also voiced Tardelli for Grand Theft Cosmos (2008)
The Six Napoleons (UK TX: August 20)
  • Gerald Campion (Hudson) was Wilkins the Porter in Shada
  • Steve Plytas (Venucci) was Wigner in The Tenth Planet
  • Vernon Dobtcheff (Mendelstam) was an Alien Scientist in The War Games, and voiced Dadda Desaka for The Cradle of the Snake (BF, 2010), and Shamur for The Children of Seth (BF, 2011)
