Doctor Who Vs. Carry On Jack

The eighth instalment in the Carry On franchise was
only the stable's second production filmed in colour
and was the first title with a historical setting.
As with its predecessor (Carry On Cabby), the script
for Carry On Jack began as an original feature entitled
Up the Armada.
Of the usual series stalwarts, only Kenneth Williams
(as Captain Fearless) and Charles Hawtrey (Walter
Sweetley) starred here, and Jim Dale (Carrier) had a
second, minor role.
Bernard Cribbins made his series debut here (as Midshipman Albert Poop-Decker), whilst Juliet Mills
(who replaced Liz Fraser as Sally), Donald Houston
(Howett), and Cecil Parker (First Sea Lord) all made
their sole series appearance here.
Released in late 1963 as a spoof of Mutiny on the Bounty (in which Percy Herbert also starred), the
comedy was shown again on Film4 yesterday, and featured fourteen Doctor Who cast and crew connections:

  • for Peter Gilmore (Captain Patch) and Walter Henry (Deck Hand) see Carry On Cleo
  • for Kenenth Cope (Sailor) see Carry On At Your Convenience
  • Jennifer Hill (Girl) was Mrs. Peace in The Unquiet Dead
  • Bernard Barnsley (Deck Hand here; Rider in Carry On Cowboy) was a Monoid in The Ark, and UNIT Soldier in (episode 2 of) The Silurians
  • Martin Lyder (Guard here; Thug in Carry On Spying; Soldier in Don't Lose Your Head) and Del Watson (Press Gang) both appeared in The War Games, as Foot Soldier (3)/Alien Guard (5) and Guard (6)/ Crimean Soldier (8) respectively
  • Pat Gorman (Pirate) made appearances in a eighty-three classic series episodes (from The Dalek Invasion of Earth: World's End to Attack of the Cybermen)
  • Jim O'Brady (Pirate), Reg Thomason (Officer) and Maxwell Craig (Deck hand) all starred in Daleks: Invasion Earth 2150 AD
  • for Aileen Lewis (Onlooker) and costume designer Joan Ellacott see Carry On Cruising
  • Anthony Waye was also assistant director on both Dalek films
