Doctor Who Vs. She

The novel She (subtitled A History of Adventure), published in 1887, was written by Henry Rider Haggard who developed the Lost World genre.
The most well known film adaptation of the story
was produced by Hammer, and a sequel, The Vengeance of She followed in 1968.
Here, Major Horace Holly (played by Peter
Cushing), an Edwardian archaeologist and
two companions (Bernard Cribbins and John
Richardson) discover a lost African city where
the Hellenistic age is still alive. It is ruled by
'She Who Must Be Obeyed' the beautiful queen
Ayesha (Ursula Andress) whose love holds the
secret of immortality.
Released in 1965, She was shown on the Talking
Pictures TV channel today and featured Hammer
stalwart Christopher Lee, and seven other Doctor Who cast and crew connections:

  • AndrĂ© Morell (Haumeid here; and Kassim in the sequel) was Marshal Gaspard de Saux Tavannes in The Massacre
  • John Maxim (Captain) was Frankenstein's Monster in (episode 4 of) The Chase, and [as John Wills] Cyberman in The Moonbase
  • George Pastell (Voice of Haumeid) and Roy Stewart (Guard) both appeared in The Tomb of the Cybermen, as Eric Klieg and Toberman respectively - Stewart was also a Saracen Warrior in The Crusade (4), and Strongman in Terror of the Autons (2)
  • Roy Hyde was sound editor on Dr. Who and the Daleks too
  • SFX assistant Ian Scoones  also provided visual effects on twenty-five editions of the classic series (from An Unearthly Child to City of Death)
  • Jackie Cummins was the wardrobe supervisor on both Dalek films too
