Doctor Who Vs. Sherlock Holmes (2009)

Co-producer Lionel Wigram was free to develop
this Anglo-American project when he left Warner
Bros. After legal issues with the Conan Doyle estate
were resolved, the studio began production in 2007,
and Guy Ritchie (who imagined Holmes as a period
action hero) was assigned as director.
New York-born actor and singer Robert Downey Jr.
and English actor Jude Law were cast as Holmes
and Watson. Irene Adler and Inspector Lestrade
were portrayed by Rachel McAdams and Eddie
Marsan, whilst Mark Strong played supernatural
villain, Lord Blackwood. Kelly Reilly and Geraldine
James appeared as Mary Morstan and Mrs. Hudson.
Location filming was conducted in Manchester,
Liverpool, London, Chatham, then Brooklyn, and
the film was released at Christmas 2009. The first
sequel, subtitled A Game of Shadows followed in
late 2011, and a third feature is still planned.
The second title starred Stephen Fry as Mycroft
Holmes, Jared Harris as Professor Moriarty,
and Paul Anderson as Colonel Sebastian Moran.
