Doctor Who Vs. Suffragette

For over fifty years in the late
19th and early 20th centuries, the
increasingly militant foot soldiers
of the fledgling British feminist
movement were forced under-
ground to pursue a dangerous
game of cat and mouse with an
equally determined but brutal
state in the struggle for equal
The fight for women's suffrage
(the extension of the franchise, ie.
the right to vote) was advocated
by Suffragettes - most famously
by Emmeline Pankhurst (1858-1928) and Emily Davison (1872-1913). They were depicted in Suffragette by Meryl Streep and Natalie Press.
This British film was shown on channel 4 last night to mark the centenary
of the Representation of the People Act 1918, passed to enfranchise women
over 30 as well as men over 21. November of that year saw legislation to
allow women to  stand for parliament, then the voting age was extended to women of 21 in 1928.
