matic portrayal of the Great
Detective in 1968 for the
BBC's second series of
Sherlock Holmes when he
replaced Douglas Wilmer.
Nigel Stock again played Dr.
Watson. After a three year
hiatus, the show (now broad-
cast in colour) consolidated
its initial success by increasing
ratings to 15.5 million viewers.
Cushing debuted as Holmes in
Hammer Film's 1959 version of
The Hound of the Baskervilles,
and the TV adaptation of the
mystery was the first to be filmed in its Dartmoor setting.
