Doctor Who Vs. Sherlock Holmes (2009)

Co-producer Lionel Wigram was free to
develop this Anglo-American project when he
left Warner Bros. After legal issues with the
Conan Doyle estate were resolved, the studio
began production in 2007, and Guy Ritchie
(who imagined Holmes as a period action
hero) was assigned as director. New York
born actor/singer Robert Downey Jr. and
Jude Law were cast as Holmes and Watson.
Location filming was conducted in London,
Manchester, Liverpool, Chatham, then
Brooklyn, and the film was released at
Christmas 2009. A sequel (subtitled
Game of Shadows) followed in late 2011,
and a third feature is still planned.
Shown on 5Star tonight, the adventure
featured Rachel McAdams (as Irene Adler),
Eddie Marsan (Lestrade), Kelly Reilly (Mary
Morstan), Geraldine James (Mrs. Hudson),
Mark Strong, and twenty-one Doctor Who
cast and crew connections:

  • James [William] Fox (Rotherham here; Holmes for The Beekeeper's Apprentice) voiced Professor Chronotis for Big Finish's Shada
  • William Hope (Standish) voiced General Tillington for Renaissance of the Daleks (2007)
  • Andrew Brooke (Captain) was Kahler-Tek the Gunslinger in A Town Called Mercy
  • Miles Jupp (Waiter) voiced Dominic for Power Play (2012), and Inquisitor Xavier for The Revolution (2014)
  • James Greene (Governor) was the Abbott in The Bells of Saint John
  • Michael Jenn (Preacher) was Clarence in The Name of the Doctor
  • Paul Bateman (Prisoner here; Stallholder in A Game of Shadows) was Groundling in The Shakespeare Code
  • Peter Miles, Rick English and Glenn Foster were all stuntmen on Tooth and Claw too - Miles also worked on The Girl in the Fireplace

Date With History: 1888

Berner St. circa 1908
The Whitechapel Murders
escalated as the killer, now
known as Jack the Ripper (he
was christened in the 'Dear
 Boss' letter just three days
before), attacked two more
 prostitutes on the same night.

The first victim of the 'Double
Event' was Elizabeth Stride,
murdered at about 1 am, on
Sunday September 30th, in
Dutfield's Yard, on Berner
(now Henriques) Street.

Less than an hour later,
Catherine Eddowes became
the fourth canonical victim of the Ripper. She was slain in Mitre Square, Aldgate, within the City of
London itself, at around 1.45 am.

Mitre Square reconstructed
for CSI: Whitechapel (2012)
Then at about 3 am, PC Alfred
Long discovered two clues in
nearby Wentworth Dwellings
on Goulston Street. A bloodied
portion of Eddowes' apron lay
in a stairwell, and above it,
written in chalk on the wall,
was this message: "the Juwes
are the men that will not be
blamed for nothing." The true
import of this 'graffito' is still
unclear - compounded by Met
police Commissioner Charles
Warren's insistence on having
it erased.
