Doctor Who Vs. The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes

Jeremy Brett and Edward Hardwicke returned
as Holmes and Watson for the seventh, and
final run of Granada's acclaimed period drama.
Brett was gravely ill during the filming of the
serials and died in 1995, aged just 61 - his
portrayal is now considered definitive.
Nineteen canonical Holmes cases remained
unadapted.
Published in 1894, The Memoirs comprised
twelve short detective stories. However, The
Three Gables and The Mazarin Stone actually
appeared in The Case Book (issued from 1921
to 1927), whilst The Dying Detective, The Red
Circle and The Cardboard Box were reprinted
in His Last Bow (released in 1917), and The
Golden Prince-Nez was included in The Return
 (1903).
In the UK, the series has been rerun on Granada Plus (closed in 2004),
ITV1 (in 2006), ITV3 (2017) and even BBC2 (from 2003 to 2005) - a
repeat run began on ITV4 today.
