today. Set in 1930s Yorkshire,
the programme was based on
the works of Northern vet, Alf
Wight (1916-1995) - he wrote
under the pen-name of James
Herriot, and was portrayed here
by Christopher Timothy.
The third, fourteen part series
(originally shown from Christmas
Day 1979 to April 1980) featured Robert Hardy, Peter Davison,

- Duncan Preston (Gibbons) voiced the titular alien in the Doctor Who and Crayola sketch for Victoria Wood as Seen on TV
- Paul Clayton (Weeting) was Bartle in Planet of the Ood, and voiced Ulysees Meregrass for The Infinite Quest, Henry for The Wormery (2003), Hale for The Survivor (2019), Edwards for Echoes of Extinction (2021), and Colchester for Torchwood
- Lois Baxter (Mrs. Egerton) was Lamia in The Androids of Tara
- Joan [Cecilia Frances] Young [born Wragge] (Miss Westerman) was Catherine de Medici in The Massacre
- John Moore (Pymm) was a Trojan in The Myth Makers (2)
- Andrew Lane (George) was a Foamasi in The Leisure Hive
- Frederick [William] Treves (Hulton) was Lieutenant Brotadac in Meglos
- Barry Jackson (Billings) was Ascaris in The Romans, Jeff Garvey in Mission to the Unknown, and Drax in The Armageddon Factor (a role reprised for Big Finish's The Trouble With Drax in 2016)
- Maggie Ollerenshaw (Mrs. Binks) voiced Audrey McShane for Love and War (2012), Allora for Gallifrey 6 (2013), and Dame Wilhelmina Gussett for The Woman in White (2016)
