Doctor Who Vs. Carry on Cruising

The sixth entry in the run was Norman Hudis' final Carry On
screenplay, and was the first produced in colour. The onboard
antics of the passengers and crew of the SS Happy Wanderer
were however filmed on an indoor set at Pinewood studios and
at Southampton docks.
Following a dispute with producer Peter Rogers, Charles Hawtrey
was dumped in favour of Lance Percival, whilst Joan Sims' last
minute replacement Dilys Laye made her series debut here.
Released by Anglo Amalgamated in 1962, the comedy was shown
on ITV3 today - it featured a reduced core cast of regulars (namely
Sid James, Kenneth Williams, Kenneth Connor, Liz Fraser), and these seven future Doctor Who cast alumni:
  • Alan [Stewart] Casley (Sailor) was Miro in (episode 1 of) Planet of the Daleks
  • Alan Harris (Passenger here; Man in Carry On Again Doctor; Guard in Carry On Henry; Photographer in Carry On Matron; Tourist in Carry On Abroad; Commuter in Carry On Emmannuelle) was a Sevateem in The Face of Evil, and titular alien in Terror of the Vervoids
  • Aileen [Mary] Lewis [born Halsey] (Mrs. Lewis here; Onlooker in Carry On Jack; Citizen in Don't Lose Your Head; Spectator in Up the Khyber; Lady in Carry On Again Doctor; Courtier in Carry On Henry; Councillor in Carry On Girls; Guest in Carry On Emmannuelle) was Extra in The Silurians (6)
  • John Timberlake [born Murphy] (Reporter) was a Shelterer in The Enemy of the World, and Kaled Scientist in Genesis of the Daleks
  • Jan Williams was a Guardian in The Ark
  • for Joan Ellacott and Reg Thomason see Carry On Sergeant
