icled another encounter between
two iconic Victorian figures -
Sherlock Holmes and Jack the
Ripper. Peter O'Toole and Laurence
Olivier were originally cast in the
lead roles, but Christopher
Plummer and James Mason port-
rayed Holmes and Watson in a screenplay influenced by The
Ripper Files by Elwyn Jones and
John Lloyd, and Stephen Knight's
The Final Solution.
Here, a Masonic conspiracy was
behind the infamous Whitechapel Murders of 1888.
Released by Embassy Pictures in early 1979, the production also
starred Anthony Quayle (as Charles Warren), Frank Finlay (Lestrade),
John Gielgud, David Hemmings, Donald Sutherland, Genevieve Bujold,
and fourteen Doctor Who cast and crew connections:
- Ron [Henry] Pember (Makins) voiced Seedle for Slipback
- June [Muriel] Brown (Annie Chapman) was Lady Eleanor in The Time Warrior, and her EastEnders character (Dot Cotton) appeared in Dimensions in Time
