Doctor Who Vs. Quatermass 2

My first exposure to the work of
Nigel Kneale was viewing the
rerun of the third episode of
Quatermass IIThe Food was
repeated for BBC2's The Lime
Grove Story in August 1991.
The second Quatermass TV serial
is the earliest to survive in its
entirety in the BBC archives, and
was commissioned to directly challenge the new ITV network -
it was transmitted live over six consecutive Saturday nights in
October and November 1955.
Eager for a sequel to The Quatermass Xperiment, Hammer Films aquired
the rights to adapt the drama before it was even shown on TV, and Kneale provided the first draft of the screenplay. Director Val Guest was again assigned to the production, and the writer was still resistant to the casting
of Brian Donlevy as the titular Professor. The thriller was released in the
UK in mid 1957, then in North America as Enemy From Space.
Shown on Talking Pictures TV last night, the film featured these eight
future Doctor Who cast connections:
  • William [Leo] Franklyn [born Beare] (Brand) voiced Pharaoh Amenhotep for Big Finish's The Roof of the World (2004)
  • Edwin [Ronald] Richfield (Peterson here; Minister in Quatermass and the Pit) was Captain [John] Hart in The Sea Devils, and Mestor in The Twin Dilemma
  • John [Alfred Louden] Stuart [born Croall] was Didonian in (episode 2 of) The Rescue
  • Arthur [James] Blake (Constable) was Hrhoonda in The Web Planet (2)
  • Peter Brace (Guard) was Guard in The Curse of Peladon (4), Sailor in The Sea Devils, and Soldier in The Android Invasion (2)
  • Arthur Howell (Guard) was Confederate Horseman in The War Games (3)
  • Henry Rayner (Drunk) was Policeman in Spearhead from Space (4)
  • Jim Brady [born George Clifford Watkin] (Guard) was Man in Daleks' Invasion Earth 2150 AD
