Doctor Who Vs. The New Avengers, Series 1 [Part 1]

The sequel series to cult classic The
Avengers debuted in the autumn of
1976, and has since been re-run in
Wales (in 1981), on BBC2 (1995),
and ITV4 (2013).
I rediscovered the drama when BBC
Four began a repeat season in late
2008. Having since viewed the show
on DVD, I realised that the stories are
not listed in their actual transmission
order (probably in the original prod-
uction order), and (due to regional
variations) there are at least three
different sets of broadcast dates
online. The dates provided here are
courtesy of Wikipedia.
The programme (a joint Anglo-French
-Canadian production) was developed
for ITV by original series producers
Albert Fennell (1920-1988) and Brian Clemens (1931-2015), and was sold
to 120 countries. Patrick Macnee (1922-2015) reprised the iconic role of
Major John [Wickham Gascoyne Beresford] Steed from The Avengers
(1961-69), and was now joined by Gareth Hunt (1942-2007) as Mike
Gambit and Joanna Lumley (born 1946) as Purdey. Hunt had played
Arak in Planet of the Spiders, whilst Lumley would later appear in The
Curse of the Fatal Death as the first female incarnation of the Doctor.
Last of the Cybernauts? and The Midas Touch were both adapted as
comic strips for The New Avengers Annual 1978.
A repeat run of the first season began on Great Action last night, and
the first six stories featured Peter Cushing, and a total of thirty-three

Doctor Who Vs. Raiders of the Lost Ark

The first instalment in the Indiana
Jones movie franchise (directed by
Steven Spielberg) was released by
Paramount Pictures in 1981.
Star Wars creator George Lucas
conceived the archaeologist hero

Doctor Who Vs. Coronation Street @ 65, Part 9: 1983-1989

The Street's longest-serving producer, Bill Podmore,
stood down in late 1982, just as
the new edgy, soap opera Brookside launched
on the fledgling Channel 4. Although the rival
show never matched Corrie in popularity or
ratings, the Liverpool-based series did make
    the Street appear dated again.
    Mervyn Watson's producership would result
in much behind-the-scenes turmoil, but the
Deirdre Barlow and Mike Baldwin affair story-
line proved to be the most successful to date.
By 1985, many of the programme's core cast
had left, including all of the original cast (bar
William Roache), then the BBC launched its
own flagship serial drama, the twice-weekly
    EastEnders. Despite retaining its audience,
Corrie was accused of being old fashioned
yet again, and another new producer, John
    Temple, oversaw a makeover.
The return of Podmore for a third and final
stint as producer in 1987 led to even more
changes, and the most significant additions to the show came in 1989
with the introduction of a third episode then an omnibus edition. As
the decade ended, Corrie was back at its peak with viewers and critics
alike. The death of Alan Bradley (Mark Eden) in December 1989 was
seen by almost 27 million viewers, the highest ever figure for the
soap, and still the ninth most watched UK broadcast in TV history.
These seven years on the Street featured David Brierly, and a total
of thirty-three Doctor Who cast and crew connections:
    • [Robert] Micheal Bilton (Pearson) was Charles de Teligny in The Massacre, Collins in Pyramids of Mars, and Time Lord in The Deadly Assassin
