Doctor Who Vs. The Avengers @ 65: Series 2

When production on the initial run of
The Avengers was curtailed by a strike

at ABC Television, lead actor Ian Hendry

quit the series to pursue a cinema

career, and Patrick Macnee's role of

John Steed then became the new focus. 

The cult fantasy show returned to ITV
in the autumn of 1962, with Steed now
joined by fellow agent, Dr. Cathy Gale, portrayed by Honor Blackman (1925-

2020). She was unlike any female

character seen before on British TV,
and was ultimately emulated by every
actress in similar roles since.

Doctor Who Vs. Night of the Big Heat

prolific sci-fi and crime writer John

Lymington.

Here, whilst Britain shivers in

deepest winter, the remote
Scottish isle of Fara experiences

an inexplicable heatwave - the

result of an alien incursion.

The story was first adapted for ITV's Play of the Week in 1960,
and starred Bernard Cribbins,

Bernard Archard, and Leonard

Grahame. Released in the UK by Planet Films in 1967 (then in America in

1971 as Island of the Burning Damned), the production featured genre

Doctor Who Vs. Sherlock Holmes, Series 2 (1968)

Cushing reprised his cinematic

portrayal of the Great Detective in

1968 for the BBC's second series

 of Sherlock Holmes when he

replaced Douglas Wilmer. Nigel Stock again played Dr. Watson.

After a three year hiatus, the

show (now broadcast in colour)

consolidated its initial success by increasing ratings to 15.5 million

viewers.

Cushing debuted as Holmes in

Hammer Film's 1959 version of

The Hound of the Baskervilles,

and the network's TV adaptation

of the mystery was the first to be filmed in its Dartmoor setting. Cushing (1913-1994) returned to the role

one last time for The Masks of Death in 1984, and even appeared as Sir

Arthur Conan Doyle in The Great Houdini (1976). Only six episodes from

the sixteen-part season exist in the archives and were first issued on DVD

Doctor Who Vs. ITV @ 70: Coronation Street, Part 2: 1962-1964

Despite a critical start in December 1960 (when

the Daily Mirror said the programme was unreal-

istic and "doomed"), the popularity of Corrie was

cemented within weeks. The soap topped the TV

ratings chart for the first time in March 1961, and

reached a 1960s peak of over 21 million viewers in December 1964.

Coronation Street soon became noted for its
depiction of a working class community, and
established the use of Northern English language

and dialect, widely heard on British television for

the first time. The show first aired in Australia in

1963, and began in New Zealand a year later.
