Doctor Who Vs. Carry On Up the Jungle

Series stalwarts Sid James,
Joan Sims, Charles Hawtrey,
Bernard Bresslaw, and Terry Scott (who replaced Jim Dale)
all starred in the nineteenth
entry from the Carry On stable.
Kenneth Williams' role was also
recast - Frankie Howerd now
made his second appearance in
the franchise, whilst Kenneth Connor returned to the series
six years after Carry On Cleo.
Prior to filming, Up The Jungle
was intended to be titled Carry
On Tarzan (but that character was still the property of the Edgar Rice
Burroughs estate), then was known as Carry On Jungle Boy during
shooting. The first Carry On Christmas TV special was recorded at
Pinewood immediately after this production, which was accompanied
by the BBC documentary Carry On Forever.
The low-budget comedy (released in 1970) was shown on ITV3
today - it featured Jacki Piper's series debut (of four roles) and
eight Doctor Who cast connections:

  • for Sims (Lady Bagley) and Bresslaw (Upsidaisi) see Carry On Nurse
  • Roy Stewart, Chris Konylis and Oscar James (Noshas) all starred in The Crusade as Saracen Warriors - Stewart was later Toberman in The Tomb of the Cybermen, and Tony [the Strongman] in (episode 2 of) Terror of the Autons, whilst Konylis was also an ISC Officer in The Tenth Planet, and Crewman in The Wheel in Space (1)
  • Nina Baden Semper (Nosha Girl) voiced Mrs. Braudy for Big Finish's Memory Lane (2006)
  • Willie Jonah (Nosha) was Old Tibo in Can You Hear Me?
  • for Heather Emmanuel (Lubi) see Carry On Again Doctor
