Doctor Who Vs. Carry On @ 65: Carry On Jack

The eighth entry in the Carry On franchise
(only the stable's second production filmed in
colour) was the first title with a period setting.
As with its predecessor (Carry On Cabby), the
script for Jack began as an original feature
entitled Up the Armada
Kenneth Williams and Charles Hawtrey (the only series regulars to star here) were joined
by Jim Dale in his second minor role. Bernard Cribbins made his series debut (pictured as
Poopdecker), whilst Juliet Mills (who replaced Liz Fraser), Donald Houston, Patrick Cargill, Cecil
Parker, and all made their sole series appearance
here.
Released in early 1964, the comedy (a spoof of
Mutiny on the Bounty) was shown on ITV3 today
- it featured seventeen Doctor Who cast and crew connections:

  • Bernard Barnsley (Deckhand here; Rider in Carry On Cowboy) was Monoid in The Ark, and UNIT Soldier in The Silurians (2)
  • Martin [Willy] Lyder [born Leyde] (Guard here; Thug in Carry On Spying; Soldier in Don't Lose Your Head) and Del Watson (Press gang here; Audience in Carry On Girls) both appeared in The War Games, as Foot Soldier (3)/Alien Guard (5) and Guard (6)/Crimean Soldier (8) respectively
  • John Tordoff (Pirate) was Alec Leeson in Colony in Space (4)
  • Bob Anderson (stuntman here; fight arranger on Don't Lose Your Head) was Guard in The Enemy of the World (4)
  • [William] Pat Gorman (Pirate) made appearances in eighty-three episodes (from The Dalek Invasion of Earth tAttack of the Cybermen)
  • Jim Brady [born George Clifford Watkin] Pirate here; Citizen in Don't Lose Your Head; Worker in Carry On at Your Convenience), Maxwell Craig (Deck hand) and Pat [Francis Xavier] Judge (Pirate here; Senator in Carry On Cleo) all starred in Daleks' Invasion Earth 2150 AD
  • for Aileen Lewis (Onlooker) and costume designer Joan Ellacott see Carry On Cruising
  • Anthony Waye was also assistant director on both Dalek films
