the comedy was the top grossing
film at the UK box office in 1959.
It became the most successful
title in the run, and was a surprise hit in America. Kenneth Williams, Kenneth Connor, Charles Hawtrey, Bill Owen, Hattie Jacques, Shirley Eaton and
Norman Rossington all returned from Sergeant. Joan Sims, Bernard
Bresslaw, Leslie Phillips, June Whitfield, Joan Hickson and Rosaling Knight
all made their series debuts here - Sims would appear in twenty-three
further films, Bresslaw in fourteen others, and Hickson in another four.
