Doctor Who Vs. Inspector Morse, Series 4

A repeat run of the fourth season
of Zenith and Carlton's acclaimed
crime drama (first screened in the
winter of 1990) concluded on ITV4
today.
John Thaw and Kevin Whately port-
rayed the Oxford-based detectives,
DCI Endeavour Morse and DS Robbie
Lewis. Thaw earned the second of
four consecutive BAFTA Best Actor
 nominations for his role here, whilst
the series earned Best Drama awards
in 1992 and 1993.
The four cases (all original screen-
plays) again featured cameos from Morse creator Colin Dexter, Trevor Martinand a total of twenty-three Doctor Who cast and crew connections:

The Infernal Serpent (UK TX: January 3)
  • Geoffrey [Dyson] Palmer (Copley-Barnes) and George Costigan (Garrett) both appeared in Voyage of the Damned, as Captain Hardaker and Max Capricorn respectively - Palmer was also Edward Masters in The Silurians, and the Administrator in The Mutants
  • David [Henry] Neal (Dear) was the President in The Caves of Androzani
  • Michael [John] Attwell (Parsons) was Isbur in The Ice Warriors, and Bates in Attack of the Cybermen
  • John Joyce (Gray) was Garvin in The Daemons
  • Denys [Vernon] Hawthorne (CS Rennie here; Pathologist for The Silent World of Nicholas Quinn, 1996) was Rudge in Terror of the Vervoids
  • Cheryl Campbell (Sylvie) was Ocean Waters in The Sarah Jane Adventures: The Vault of Secrets
  • series cinematographer Paul Wheeler was a film cameraman on The Awakening
  • art director Stephen Scott was production designer on Mawdryn Undead
The Sins of the Fathers (UK TX: January 10)
  • Simon Slater (Weeks) was Edwardes in Terror of the Vervoids, then voiced Carvil/Shaler for The Lords of Terror (2018), Nustanu for Devil in the Mist, Montague Davis/Moses Walker/Coachman for A Spoonful of Mayhem (both 2019), and the titular victim for The Murder of Oliver Akkron (2021)
  • Noel [Frank] Johnson (Butler) was King Thous in The Underwater Menace, and Charles Grover MP in Invasion of the Dinosaurs
  • Paul Shelley [born Matthews] (Radford) was the Minister of Persuasion in Four to Doomsday, and voiced Jesten and Taker for The Whispering Forest (2010)
  • Alex Jennings (Preece) voiced Lord Hawthorn for The Hunting Season

Driven to Distraction (UK TX: January 17)
  • Tariq Yunus (George) was Cass in The Robots of Death
  • David [John] Ryall (Whittaker here; Cooper in Lewis) voiced Carthok for Phantasmagoria (1999)
  • James Duggan (Warden) was a Trojan Guard in The Myth Makers
Masonic Mysteries (UK TX: January 24)
  • Celestine Randall (Sandra) auditioned for the role of Victoria Waterfield in April 1967
  • Roland Oliver (Conductor) was Neman in The Keeper of Traken
  • John Arthur (Porter) voiced Cosmo Devine for Invaders from Mars (2002)
  • Richard [George] Kane [born Wright] (CI Bottomley) was Valmar in The Power of the Daleks
  • Iain Cuthbertson (McNutt) was Garron in The Ribos Operation
  • [Timothy] Tip Tipping (Dene) was stunt arranger on Remembrance of the DaleksThe Curse of Fenric and Survival
