Mary Ann Nichols (nee Walker, andknown locally as Polly), aged 43,
became the first canonical victim
of the unidentified Victorian serial
killer eventually dubbed Jack the
Ripper.
She was murdered at around 3.40
am, on Friday August 31st, in
Buck's Row (now Durward Street), located in Whitechapel, East London. Nichols was discovered by
carman, Charles Cross, and she
was buried at the City of London cemetery on September 6th.
In 2012, Cross (aka Lechmere)
was proposed as a Ripper suspect
by Swedish researcher Christier
Holmgren in Channel 5's The
Missing Evidence.
Assistant Commissioner of the
Metropolitan Police (CID), James
Monro resigned his post today -
he was replaced by Sir Charles
Warren. New Commissioner Robert Anderson assigned Donald Swanson to head the case. The Autumn of Terror had begun.
