Doctor Who Vs. Wycliffe, Series 1

HTV (Harlech Television until
2004, and now ITV Cymru/
Wales and ITV West Country)
produced this police proced-
ural drama based on the crime
novels of William John Burley
 (1914-2002).
Between 1968 and 2000, the
writer created twenty-two
traditional whodunnits - all set
in his native Cornwall, they
featured detective Charles
Wycliffe -  portrayed here by
Jack Shepherd (pictured
centre). The programme was filmed in the historic county (with a
production office based in Truro), and the cast included Jimmy Yuill
(right, as DI Kersey), and Helen Masters (left, DI Lane).
The Cambridge Companion to Crime Fiction (2003) notes that Wycliffe
was just one of a group of 1990's crime dramas that contrasted older
detectives with their younger colleagues who are not only better
equipped with newer techniques, but are more politically correct (see
Inspector Morse, A Touch of Frost, Vera). Regionally based series like
Wycliffe were the opposite of socially realist fare like Cracker, Prime
Suspect, Whitechapel and Luther.
Following a pilot episode, the show endured for five series from 1994
to 1998, and won an RTS award for best TV theme. In 2006, ITV's
Super Sleuths strand examined the legacy of Wycliffe and his literary
peers.
All seven mysteries here were adapted from Burley's books, whilst
all later stories were original screenplays. A repeat run of the first
season concluded on ITV3 today - it featured a total of thirty-three

Doctor Who Vs. Agatha Christie's Marple: Series 6

Julia McKenzie returned as Jane Marple for the last
season of ITV's period crime drama. The first case
was based on the Queen of Crime's fifty-fifth novel
(published in 1964), and was the third TV version of
A Caribbean Mystery.
Part two was adapted from a short-story that first
appeared in 1960's The Adventure of the Christmas
Pudding - it combined the plot of The Thumb Mark of St. Peter (from an earlier anthology of 1932) with the
original narrative of Greenshaw's Folly.
Repeated on ITV3 today, the final mystery did not
originally feature Marple - the book (issued in 1967,
and one of the author's favourites) was also drama-
tised for cinema (in 1972), and Radio 4 (2008).
When it was announced that the BBC had acquired
the rights for the production of further Christie
adaptations in 2014, ITV Studios effectively axed
Marple. The network's Poirot series also concluded in
late 2013 after fourteen years. The Corporation has subsequently shown new versions of Partners in
Crime, And Then There Were None, Witness for the
Prosecution, The ABC Murders, Ordeal by Innocence,
The Pale Horse, Murder is Easy, and latterly Towards
Zero. 2017 saw Channel 5's Crooked House, and the second film version of Murder on the Orient Express, whilst the reworked
Death on the Nile and Why Didn't They Ask Evans? soon followed.
A Haunting in Venice (2023) was based on Hallowe'en Party. Seven Dials
was released on Netflix last month, whilst Britbox's modern-day iteration
of Tommy & Tuppence is now in production.
This final run of Marple featured a total of twenty-seven Doctor Who
