Doctor Who Vs. Trial & Retribution IX

Lynda La Plante's acclaimed crime
drama returned to ITV in November
2005. David Hayman, Dorian Lough,
Victoria Smurfit, and Sarah Ozeke
reprised their respective roles (as
DCS Walker, DSatchell, DCI Connor,
and DC West). Like La Plante's earlier
hit series Prime Suspect, the prog-
ramme employed distinctive split-
screen technique.
A repeat run of this two-part case (the
final one in that format, and subtitled
The Lovers) began on  ITV3 last night
 it featured these eleven Doctor Who

Doctor Who Vs. Edge of Darkness

Forty years ago this month, during
the peak of Cold War paranoia,
BBC1 viewers tuned into another
apparent crime series. But this
British political drama from Troy
Kennedy Martin was game-
changing television - no one had
seen TV like this before. A Holly-
wood version followed in 2010.
A rare repeat showing of the six-
part thriller (a BBC co-production
with Lionheart TV) concluded on
BBC4 last night - it featured Bob Peck (winner of the Best Actor
BAFTA for his role here as

Doctor Who Vs. Miss Marple: Nemesis

Agatha Christie's final full-length Marple mystery
(her sixty-second novel) was issued in 1971 (although Sleeping Murder was released later, in
1976), and was dramatised for BBC1 by Trevor
Bowen (who depicted Raymond West in the first
series). A short story collection, Miss Marple's Final Cases (written between 1939 and 1954),
was also published posthumously in 1979.
Joan Hickson's definitive performance here as
Marple earned a second BAFTA Best Actress
nomination. An ITV version followed in 2009.
This two-part serial (originally broadcast in
 February 1987) was shown on BBC4 tonight

Doctor Who Vs. The Yangtse Incident

Shown on Legend today, this British Lion feature
(subtitled The Story of HMS Amethyststarred
William Hartnell (1908-1975) and Richard Todd
(1919-2009), and is also notable for the film
debut of Bernard Cribbins (1928-2022).
Entered into the Cannes Film Festival of 1957,
Yangste Incident (known as both Battle Hell and
Escape of the Amethyst in America) was based
on Lawrence Earl's book, which told the true story
of HMS Amethyst. The Royal Navy frigate was
trapped on the Yangtze river for three months
during the Chinese civil war of 1949.
Hartnell (pictured as Seaman Frank) was cast as
the Doctor just six years later - he co-starred here
with eight other future classic series guest actors:

Doctor Who Vs. Miss Marple: The Body in the Library

Agatha Christie's second Marple mystery (her
thirty-first novel) was published in 1942 - it was
the first story adapted for the BBC's acclaimed
Miss Marple TV series.
After appearing in the stage version of the
writer's Appointment With Death in 1945, Joan
Hickson (1906-1998) received a note from the
Queen of Crime that read "I hope one day you
will play my dear Miss Marple."
The thriller was first shown over consecutive nights at Christmas 1984, and introduced
Hickson's definitive portrayal of Jane Marple
 (she had starred opposite Margaret Rutherford's
Marple in Murder She Said in 1961). An ITV Studios version followed in
2004. The Hampshire village of Nether Wallop doubled as the fictional St.
Mary Mead, and the series endured until 1992. The complete three-
part drama was shown on BBC4 tonight - it featured David Horovitch
(as DI Slack), Trudie Styler, and these seventeen Doctor Who cast and crew connections:
