Date With History: 1888

136 years ago today, alleged prostitute
Annie Chapman, aged 48, became the
second canonical victim of Jack the Ripper.
She was murdered at around 5.30am, on
Saturday September 8th, in the yard at the
rear of No. 29 Hanbury Street, Spitalfields.
Her mutilated body was discovered at about
6am, by a resident, John Davis. The inquest
into Chapman's murder opened two days
later, and she was buried at the Manor Park
Cemetery on September 14th.
