Victorian figures - Sherlock
Holmes and Jack the Ripper.
Peter O'Toole and Laurence
Olivier were originally cast in
the lead roles, but Christopher Plummer and James Mason
portrayed Holmes and Watson
in a screenplay influenced by
The Ripper Files by Elwyn Jones and John Lloyd, and Stephen
Knight's The Final Solution. Here, a Masonic conspiracy was behind the Whitechapel Murders.
Released by Embassy Pictures
in early 1979, the production also starred Anthony Quayle (as Charles Warren), Frank Finlay (Lestrade), John Gielgud, David Hemmings, Donald Sutherland, Genevieve Bujold, and fourteen Doctor Who cast and crew connections:

- Anthony May (Lanier) voiced Baron Maupertuis for Big Finish's All-Consuming Fire (2015)
- Elaine Ives Cameron (Ellen) was Martha in The Stones of Blood, and voiced
- Terry Duggan (Danny) was an IE Guard in The Invasion
- Michael [Maurice] Cashman (Watkins) was First Officer Bilton in Time Flight
- Roy Pattison (Carroll here; PC in Jack the Ripper, 1973) was Draconian Pilot in Frontier in Space, and Zazzka in The Hand of Fear (1)
- John [Kenneth] Tatham (Man) was Villager/Coven member in The Daemons
- Peter [Savins] Dean and Jim McManus (Constables) were Tribesman in The Face of Evil (1) and Opthalmologist in The Invisible Enemy
- stunt co-ordinator Bill Weston was a Militiaman in The Smugglers (4)
- VFX supervisor Cliff Culley was VFX designer on Planet of the Daleks, Invasion of the Dinosaurs and Robot
