Joan Sims, Charles Hawtrey,
Bernard Bresslaw, and Terry Scott (who replaced Jim Dale)
all starred in the nineteenth
entry from the Carry On stable.
Kenneth Williams' role was also
recast - Frankie Howerd now
made his second appearance in
the franchise, whilst Kenneth Connor returned to the series
six years after Carry On Cleo.
Prior to filming, Up The Jungle
was intended to be titled Carry
On Tarzan (but that character
was intended to be titled Carry
On Tarzan (but that character
was still the property of the Edgar Rice Burroughs estate), then was known
as Carry On Jungle Boy during shooting. The first Carry On Christmas TV
special was recorded at Pinewood immediately after this production, which
was accompanied by the BBC documentary Carry On Forever.
The low-budget comedy (released in 1970) was shown on ITV3 today - it
featured Jacki Piper's series debut (of four roles) and eight Doctor Who
cast connections:
- for Sims (Lady Bagley) and Bresslaw (Upsidaisi) see Carry On Nurse
- Roy Stewart, Chris Konylis (Noshas) and Oscar James (Warrior here; Witchdoctor/Knight in Carry On Laughing) all starred in The Crusade, as Saracen Warriors - Stewart was later Toberman in The Tomb of the Cybermen, and Tony [the Strongman] in (episode 2 of) Terror of the Autons, whilst Konylis was also an ISC Officer in The Tenth Planet, and Crewman in The Wheel in Space (1)
- Nina Baden Semper (Nosha Girl) voiced Mrs. Braudy for Big Finish's Memory Lane (2006)
- Willie Jonah (Nosha) was Old Tibo in Can You Hear Me?
- for Heather Emmanuel see Carry On Again Doctor
