ITC Entertainment produced a
single, twenty-six part season,
conceived by Dennis Spooner
(1932-1986) in 1967. He
wanted to incorporate his keen
interest in the paranormal into a
new crime series. Spooner had
worked with Pratt and Andre on
The Baron (1965), and with Cope
on The Avengers. The pilot was first shown on seven ITV regions on
September 19 1969, in London two days later, then in the rest of the UK
from October 5th. Only LWT screened the whole series. The programme
was broadcast as My Partner the Ghost in America, and entitled The
Phantom Detective on Spanish TV. The BBC remake of 2000 endured
for two seasons, and the Syfy channel announced a planned revival
in 2010.
A repeat run of the first thirteen instalments concluded on Great!
(formerly Sony) TV last night - they featured Roger Delgado,
Nicholas Courtney, Gerald Flood, and a total of thirty-three
