returned to ITV's seventeen regions
in the autumn of 1968 for an eight
month run, following it's debut on
American television that spring.
Patrick Macnee had portrayed John
Steed since 1961, and was now
joined for the last series by Toronto
born Linda Thorson (girlfriend of the
programme's new producer John
Bryce), whilst Patrick Newell now
took a regular role as Mother.
After completing production on only
three episodes, Bryce was fired -
former producers Brian Clemens
and Albert Fennell resumed their
posts. Both were later nominated
for a Primetime Emmy Award. The show was finally recognised by
BAFTA with a Special Award in 2000.
The Avengers spawned a stage version in 1971 (Simon Oates starred as Steed), then Macnee (1922-2015) reprised his iconic role for The New Avengers in 1976. Warner Bros. released
a much maligned cinematic treatment in 1998, with Ralph Fiennes as Steed,
Uma Thurman as Dr. Peel, and Jim Broadbent as Mother. An audio iteration
from Big Finish followed in 2013, with Steed now played by Julian Wadham.
The final season included screenplays from Terrance Dicks, Malcolm
Hulke, and Terry Nation. A repeat run of the sixth season continued on
Great!TV tonight - the final seventeen stories (from a total of thirty-three)
