Doctor Who Vs. Suffragette

For over fifty years in the late
19th and early 20th centuries,
the increasingly militant foot
soldiers of the fledgling British
feminist movement were
forced underground to pursue
a dangerous game of cat and
mouse with an equally deter-
mined but brutal state in the
struggle for equal rights.
The fight for women's suffrage
(the extension of the franchise
- the right to vote) was advo-
cated by Suffragettes - most
famously by Emily Davison
(1872-1913) and Emmeline
Pankhurst (1858-1928). They
were depicted in Suffragette (shown on Film4 tonight) by Meryl Streep
and Natalie Press.
The Representation of the People Act 1918 was passed to enfranchise
women over 30 as well as men over 21. November of that year saw
legislation to allow women to  stand for parliament, then the voting
age was extended to women of 21 in 1928.
