Doctor Who Vs. Carry On Camping

BFI online observed that
"although seemingly anarchic,
the Carry On films were always
inherently conservative. This is
clearly demonstrated" here.
This classic British romp was
filmed just after the Summer of
Love, and at the height of global
student unrest.
Series stalwarts Sid James, Joan
Sims, Bernard Bresslaw, Kenneth
Williams, Charles Hawtrey, Hattie
Jacques, Barbara Windsor, Peter
Butterworth, and Terry Scott all
starred in the seventeenth entry
in the franchise. Released in 1972,
Carry On Camping was the most
successful film at the British box office that year, and is now regarded
as one the best loved titles in the run. Shown today during ITV3's
festive Carry On season, the comedy featured fourteen Doctor Who
cast connections:

  • for Windsor see Carry On Spying
  • for Derek Francis see Carry On Abroad
  • for Sims and Bresslaw see Carry On Nurse
  • for Walter Henry see Carry On Cleo
  • for Julian Holloway see Follow That Camel
  • for Butterworth and Alf Mangan see Carry On Cowboy
  • Mike Lucas (Youth) was Tom in The Smugglers
  • Georgina Moon (Joy here; Sally in Carry On Behind) voiced Mrs. Middlemint for Big Finish's The Behemoth (2017)
  • George [Clinton] Ballantine (Man) was Manservant in The Masque of Mandragora, and Hawker in Snakedance (1)
  • Leslie Weeks (Man) was Varga plant in Mission to the Unknown, UNIT Soldier in (episode 3 of) The Mind of Evil, Vogan in Revenge of the Cybermen (1), and Brother/Villager in The Masque of Mandragora
  • Elizabeth Knight (Jane here; Nurse in Carry On Again Doctor) was considered for the role of Victoria Waterfield
  • for Tina Simmons see Don't Lose Your Head
