Jeremy Brett's definitive portrayal of the Great Detective returned to Granada's acclaimed period drama, and was now
joined by Edward Hardwicke (1932-2011)
who replaced David Burke as Dr. Watson.
In 1965, Burke had appeared opposite
Peter Cushing's Holmes in The Greek
Interpreter, and would later depict Sir
Arthur Conan Doyle in Photographing
Fairies. Eric Porter and Colin Jeavons
played Moriarty and Lestrade, whilst
Patrick Allen starred as Sebastian Moran.
These seven mysteries (from the collection
of thirteen, all originally serialised in The
Strand from 1903) first aired of 1986.
A repeat run of the third season began on
ITV4 today - it featured Ian Marter (in
