Doctor Who Vs. The Hound of the Baskervilles (2002)
Produced by Tiger Aspect for BBC1, this
adaptation of Conan Doyle's most famous
and prolific Sherlock Holmes mystery was
shot extensively on location in Liverpool,
Cumbria and the Isle of Man.
The narrative here differs considerably from
the original novel, published in 1902, follow-
ing serialisation in The Strand magazine.
First shown in the UK on Boxing Day 2002
(and in America a month later), Holmes and
Watson were now portrayed by Richard
Roxburgh (pictured right) and Ian Hart (left). Roxburgh then played Holmes' nemesis,
Moriarty in The League of Extraordinary
Gentlemen, whilst Hart later depicted Conan
Doyle in Finding Neverland. A sequel (also
written by Allan Cubitt), The Case of the Silk Stocking saw Hart reprise his role opposite Rupert Everett's Holmes.
Shown on Talking Pictures TV last night, the BAFTA nominated serial
featured Richard EGrant, Neve McIntosh, Matt Day, John Nettles,
Geraldine James, and eleven Doctor Who cast and crew connections:
- Grant (Stapleton here; Sherlock in The Other Side, 1992; Mycroft in Sherlock, 2002) and McIntosh (Beryl) were reunited on The Snowmen and The Name of the Doctor, when they reprised their roles of Dr. Walter Simeon and Vastra
- Ron Cook (Barrymore) was Magpie in The Idiot's Lantern
- Liza Tarbuck (Mrs. Barrymore) voiced Captain Kaliko for The Infinite Quest, and Lysette Barclay for Plague of the Daleks (2009)
- Danny Webb (DI Lestrade here; DI Carter in A Scandal in Belgravia) was John Jefferson in The Impossible Planet and The Satan Pit, and voiced Byron for The Girl Who Never Was (2007), and Ori in The Dark Husband (2008)
- Jim Norton (Coroner here; Walter in Elementary) voiced Major Thomas Kennet for Scream of the Shalka, opposite Grant's Ninth Doctor
- Stephan Bessant (Warder) voiced Julius for The Council of Nicaea (2005), and Taav for The Return of the Doctor (2025)
- Julie Scott was also co-executive producer on ninety-one stories (from The Runaway Bride to Last Christmas), Time Crash, Music of the Spheres, Dreamland, City of the Daleks, Blood of the Cybermen, The Sarah Jane Adventures, Torchwood, An Adventure in Space and Time, The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot and Doctor Who at the Proms
- Mark Isaac was also focus puller on sixteen instalments of the revived series (from Rose to School Reunion)
- Bob Shipsey was also a camera operator on The Doctor's Wife and Night Terrors
- script supervisor Karen Jones began her career as production assistant (PA) on Mindwarp
