The third instalment of Central's BAFTA
winning crime drama, first aired in January
1987, and was repeated on ITV3 today.
The case was based on Colin Dexter's fourth
novel (published in 1979) - it again starred
John Thaw as the titular detective, and Kevin
Whately as Lewis.
Set around St. Frideswides church in Oxford,
the mystery closely followed the source
narrative - it featured Michael Hordern, and
these fourteen Doctor Who cast and crew
connections:
- John Normington (Pawlen) and Harold [Sidney] Innocent (Archdeacon) both starred in The Happiness Patrol, as Trevor Sigma and Gilbert M - Normington was also Trau Morgus in The Caves of Androzani, whilst the latter also voiced Freeth for The Paradise of Death - Innocent, Jean Marsh and Terence de Marney are the only Doctor Who guest actors to appear in The Twilight Zone (1959-1964)
- Maurice O'Connell (Josephs) was Cockerill in Frontios
- Michael [John] Goldie (Jimmy here; Tramp in The Settling of the Sun) was Jack Craddock in The Dalek Invasion of Earth, and Elton Laleham in The Wheel in Space
- Richardson Morgan (Landlord) was Corporal [Nicholas] Blake in The Web of Fear, and Rogin in The Ark in Space
- James Greene (Counsel) was the Abbott in The Bells of Saint John
- Joanna [Margaret] Wake (Nurse) voiced Helena Faversham for Big Finish's House of Silents (2016)
- Gina McKee (Girl) voiced the eponymous role for The Lumiat (2020), then Masterful (2021) and Time Lord Immemorial (2023)
