The cult British fantasy show returned
to the ITV regions in the autumn of
1968 for an eight-month run, following
its debut on American television in the
spring.
Patrick Macnee (who had portrayed
John Steed since 1961) was now joined
for the last series by the Canadian-born
actress, Linda Thorson (born 1947),
girlfriend of the show's new producer,
John Bryce. The series opened with
Diana Rigg's final appearance as Emma
Peel. Patrick Newell (1932- 1988) also
took a regular role here (in twenty
episodes) as spymaster, Mother.
After completing production on only three episodes, Bryce was fired and previous showrunners Brian Clemens (1931-2015) and Albert Fennell (1920-1988) resumed their posts - both were later nominated for a
Primetime Emmy Award. The programme was finally recognised by BAFTA with a Special Award in 2000.
The final season included screenplays from Terry Nation, and
Dennis Spooner. A repeat run of these sixteen stories (from a
series total of thirty-three) began on Great! TV tonight - they
featured guest roles for Anthony Ainley, Bernard Cribbins,
Richard Hurndall, and seventy other Doctor Who cast and crew
