Doctor Who Vs. James Bond, Part 2: From Russia With Love

Ian Fleming's fifth spy novel
(published in 1957) was
adapted for Eon Productions
 second Bond feature. Following
the success of Dr. NoUnited
Artists greenlit a sequel and
doubled the budget.
Released in late 1963, the film
was a commercial and critical
hit, and the future of the
franchise was assured. Sean
Connery would appear in five
further Bond assignments.
Shown on ITV4 last night, this
production marked the debut of
Desmond Llewellyn as Q (a role he would play until The World is Not Enough in 1999), the return of Lois Maxwell (Moneypenny), and featured twenty-nine Doctor Who cast and crew connections:
  • Francis [Marie] De Wolff (Vavra) was Vasor in (episode 4 of) The Keys of Marinus, then Agamemnon in The Myth Makers
  • George Pastell [born Nino Pastellides] (Conductor) was Eric Kleig in The Tomb of the Cybermen
  • Fred [Thomas] Haggerty (Krilencu here; stunts on The Spy Who Loved Me, For Your Eyes Only, OctopussyA View to a Kill) was a stuntman on The Time Meddler (2)
  • Neville Jason [born Jacobson] (Chauffeur) was Prince Reynart in The Androids of Tara
  • Peter Brayham (Rhoda) was stunt co-ordinator on The Christmas Invasion, New Earth and School Reunion
  • Jan Williams (Masseuse) was a Guardian in The Ark
  • [Musa] Moris Farhi (Gypsy here; Technician in You Only Live Twice) submitted two scripts in 1964 - Farewell Great Macedon and The Fragile Yellow Arc of Fragrance were both adapted by Big Finish in 2010
  • Elizabeth Counsell (Woman) voiced Abigail Woburn for The Hourglass Killers (2012)
  • Aileen [Mary] Lewis [born Halsey] (Spectator here; Delegate in Live and Let Die; Woman in Octopussy; Patron in Never Say Never Again) was an Extra in The Silurians (6)
  • Tex Fuller [born Albert Charles Baseley] (Henchman) was an Exxilon in Death to the Daleks (3), and stuntman on The Masque of Mandragora (1)
  • Gordon [Gerhard Paul] Sterne (Kessler) was Professor Heldorf in The Ambassadors of Death (according to IMDB, he was booked as Cyberman in The Moonbase but was replaced by Peter Greene)
  • Sonny [born Charles William] Willis (Officer) was Cyberman in The Moonbase, TV Crewman in The Daemons, and Time Lord in The Deadly Assassin
  • Stuntmen [Cathal] Max[well Parnell Macaulay Lloyd] Faulkner, Peter [Alexander] Diamond and Bob [James Gilbert] Anderson all worked on the classic run too
