Doctor Who Vs. A Christmas Carol (1999)

This version of Charles Dickens' festive
literary classic was a faithful retelling of the
original novella (published in 1843) with a
cast led by Patrick Stewart (nominated for
 an Emmy award for his role of Ebenezer
Scrooge).
Shown on Channel 5 today, this Anglo-
American TV movie (released in late 1999)
featured Richard E Grant, Dominic West,
Trevor Peacock, Edward Petherbridge, Liz
Smith, and eighteen Doctor Who cast and
crew connections:

  • Ian McNeice (Fezziwig) played Winston Churchill in The Beast BelowVictory of the DaleksThe Pandorica Opens and The Wedding of River Song - a role reprised by Big Finish for The Churchill YearsTheir Finest Hour (2018), Subterfuge and Operation: Hellfire (both 2020) -  he also voiced Zeus for Immortal Beloved (2007), and Reginald Harcourt for The Renaissance Man (2012)

  • Elizabeth [Jean] Spriggs [born Williams] (Mrs. Riggs) was Tabby in Paradise Towers
  • Laura Fraser (Belle) was Kane in Orphan 55
  • Celia [Diana Savile] Imrie (Mrs. Bennett) was [Rosemary] Kizlet in The Bells of Saint John, then voiced Dr. Elizabeth Bradley for The Fifth Citadel (2013), Madame Tissot for Gallery of Ghouls, Livia for Gallifrey: Enemy Lines (both 2016), and Dr. Kessica Myles for Hooklight 1 (2025)
  • John Franklyn Robbins (Crump) was a Time Lord in (part 1) of Genesis of the Daleks
  • Matthew Cottle (Wilkins) voiced Paine for The Satanic Mill (2015), Hargreaves for Aquitaine, Leith for The Shadow Vortex, Henry Clarke for Quicksilver (all 2016), Maxwell Wilberforce Bell for Subterranea, Ben Donelly for Invocation, and Overseer for The Sontaran Project (all 2017)

  • Gareth [Richard] Tandy was also first assistant director on Wild Blue Yonder and The Church on Ruby Road
  • SFX supervisor Richard [Stanley Palmer] Conway was VFX assistant/ designer on The Green DeathPlanet of the Spiders (1), The Seeds of Doom, The Robots of Death, Underworld and The Invasion of Time
  • Ken Barley was plasterer on Dr. Who and the Daleks too
